    This full day of intermediate-level Adobe Premiere workshop is recommended for anyone who already understands the core competencies of the Premiere editing suite, or for anyone who has used Premiere on‐and‐off but wants better mastery of the software.

    The four sections of material to be covered in the workshop are as follows:

    Color Correction: Explore primary color grading, luminance correction, the Reference Monitor, Fast Color Corrector, secondary color correction with the motion trackers in CC, Adjustment Layers, white balance (including indoor vs. outdoor), skin tones, and plug-in effects like Lumetri color engine.

    Audio Post-Production: Topics to be covered include interview surgery (e.g., killing long, awkward pauses), room tone, smooth transitions and the sound of a breath, noise reduction using a noise print in Audition, spectral layers for sound removal, high-pass and low-pass filters for wind, hum, and feedback attenuation; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mixing, and creating markers for music cues.

    Multi-Camera Editing: Explore multi-camera editing, including how to deal with multi-camera sequences and nested sequences, picking camera “angles” in real-time, synchronization of multiple sources with external audio, and getting multiple focal lengths from a single camera.

    Special Effects for Documentary: While documentaries may not use as many special effects as narrative films, there are some that can be beneficial to filmmakers who don’t want to spend money on expensive post-production fixes. This section explores special effects options and plug-ins available within the Premiere program itself including working with frame rates (slow-motion and fast-motion), eliminating flickering, making things disappear in-frame such as trade names, blurring faces, and stabilizing shots.

    Please note: These sections will focus on options available within Premiere itself or its plug-ins rather than in After Effects or other programs.

    ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

    Paul Moon​

    H. Paul Moon (http://zenviolence.com) is a filmmaker whose body of​ work includes short and feature-length documentaries, dance films, and experimental cinema, featured and awarded at over a hundred film festivals worldwide. He has taught documentary editing at Docs In Progress as an Adobe Certified Expert, and serves as adjunct professor at George Mason University's Film and Video Studies program.  He also manages a network of online communities at http://focuspulling.com that keeps pace with new camera technologies. He worked as a small camera specialist for a Paramount feature film starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, and as cinematographer for director Josephine Deckerís film in "collective:unconscious" that debuted at the South by Southwest Festival. Recent films include "Sitka: A Piano Documentary" (http://sitkadoc.com) about the craftsmanship of Steinway pianos, and "Quartet for the End of Time" (http://quatuor.xyz) about Olivier Messiaenís transcendent WWII composition, that premiered on the commemorative date and at the place where the imprisoned composer first debuted his work. Moon's latest film, an award-winning feature-length documentary about the life and music of American composer Samuel Barber (http://samuelbarberfilm.com) recently premiered on PBS, and he is currently finishing another documentary feature about Western folklife, cowboy poetry, and the American frontier (http://westdocumentary.com). Excerpted poetry films from that project have appeared in museum exhibitions, and numerous film festivals, leading up to the feature film's completion.  Ongoing projects include an opera film based on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" (http://scroogeopera.com), a documentary at the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation (http://95thesesfilm.com), and a biographical portrait of Whittaker Chambers.

  • Participants will receive hands-on training in video production and editing by creating content for MCM’s “Let’s Talk MoCo” show. Videography instruction areas include professional cameras use, lighting, and audio. Students will shoot a field project and use Adobe Premiere Pro to complete video segments. Editing instruction areas include media management, working on a timeline, transitions, basic effects and text.

    No previous television production experience needed, but this is a technical, hands-on training experience, so participants are expected to jump right in and be ready to learn!

    Conceptual artist Allan McCollum has spent over fifty years exploring how objects can inspire various forms of meaning in different social and cultural contexts. Often creating sculptures, paintings, and photographs in series, he applies the concept of mass production to items that are, in fact, handmade, original artworks, blurring the boundaries between the two. He is well known for his Surrogate Paintings, first shown in 1978, which were recently on view in Washington at the National Gallery of Art and the Hirshhorn. These works draw attention to major issues in contemporary art, addressing the realms of painting and sculpture, presence and absence, and physical and cerebral. In 2006, he created The Shapes Project,using the software program Adobe Illustrator to produce a unique artwork for every human on earth, again obscuring the divide between personal objects and mass production. McCollum will join Hirshhorn Chief Curator Stéphane Aquin to discuss his extensive career and how his art works within and reflects our society, which is, like his provocative practice, filled with contradictions.

  • This hands-on class for new filmmakers focuses on how to plan, shoot and edit a short documentary. The class will introduce participants to screen language and sequencing and provide hands-on experience with digital video cameras and the Adobe Premiere editing system.  Equipment will be provided.

    Participants will work in small teams to produce a 3-5 minute documentary profile piece. Story subjects will be assigned to allow participants to focus their energies on learning how to use the equipment, work in a crew, and plan and structure their story.  Story subjects are drawn from people and places in the local community, including nonprofits, small businesses, and artists. Filming locations may be non-Metro-accessible (but we will try to team groups together to ensure at least one in each team has a car).

    The class takes place on seven consecutive Saturdays at Docs In Progress and at production sites in the area. Participants will also need to commit an additional 4-6 hours of time outside of class for production shoots and editing.

    April 20 - June 8, 2019 (seven Saturdays) from 10 am - 1 pm. **PLEASE NOTE that class will NOT meet on Saturday, May 25 due to the Memorial Day holiday.

    In addition, participants should plan on spending 4-6 additional hours outside of class time between the second and third week of class for shooting. Participants who want additional edit time for their projects will also have the option of staying for two extra hours after the fifth class session and two extra hours after the sixth class session.

    SCHOLARSHIP
    Thanks to support from the William and Karen Tell Foundation, Docs In Progress is able to offer one partially-subsidized spot in the class to a nonprofit professional who would benefit from taking the class to be able to apply these skills to his/her work. If selected for this competitive scholarship, the individual or his/her institution would only have to pay $300 (roughly 50% less than the regular cost for the workshop).     What's the refund policy?
    If your circumstances change and you must withdraw from a class after registering, please be aware of our refund policy:

    Withdrawal 30 or more calendar days before the first day of a program: 75% refund
    Withdrawal 11-29 calendar days before the first day of a program: 50% refund
    Withdrawal 10 or fewer calendar days before a program: No refund

    Can I pay by check?
    Yes. If you are paying by check, you still need to register online, but select check payment option. Please note that registration rates are based on the date when we receive full payment, not the date you register. We cannot hold spots in any program until full payment is received.

    Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
    You should register the name of the person who will be attending the class even if you are using a different credit card to pay.
