Great company to work at

Pros: I spent the last 14 years of my life at Microsoft. In the last few years, the excitement was brought back by the new management. The new direction is clearer, more in line with the industry needs. There are frustrations there like anywhere else, but I always got the feeling that if you put some effort into it, you could have a great career. And the different teams offer different cultures, so you can move around inside the company and really keep the excitement going. The people you work with are brilliant for the most part, and that is definitely something I'll miss. Other companies have brilliant people too, I'm just saying that most people at Microsoft I interacted with were really smart and it was great. Most projects I worked on in Windows were really exciting, and touched the lives of millions of users. That's not something you get in all companies for sure. Work-life balance is really good. I would say you can control it: more hours will get you a better career, and that makes sense. Fewer hours means less progression, but as long as you're doing a good job and meeting your goals, you'll be fine. The use of telemetry and user feedback is getting really common and really helps deliver products that satisfy our customers.

Cons: Sometimes heavy infrastructure and processes, even though with the shorter release cycles have helped a lot with agility. Sometimes, new V1 products do not feel like they're up to par with the legacy products they are replacing, then the V2 version often gets cancelled, so it sometimes feel like we are going slightly backwards in terms of functionality. Again, this seems to get better with the use of telemetry as we tend to focus on functionality that is most useful to customers.

Sound like a cool place to work?

  • Many believe AI will advance government; changing the speed, reliability, and ability for agencies to make more informed decisions and better deliver on their missions. Integral to leveraging the power of AI is data which floods many agencies yet is often underutilized or even locked up due to lack of resources, knowledge of tools, and compliance.

    • On April 25th 2018, TrueTandem is presenting “Getting Requirements Right (the First Time)” in Reston, VA at Microsoft.

Visit our web site here to learn more about what we do and the great clients that we're proud to work with -- and follow us on Twitter.

      ABOUT THE EVENT:

Albert Einstein once said, "if I can’t see it, I can’t understand it." This is the basis for utilizing visualization tools in the requirements gathering phase of software development projects.

Most projects that fail are due to miscommunication between the business stakeholders and the development team. Visualization tools combat this, allowing you to quickly see your software solution before a single line of code is written. Advanced visualization tools enable extremely rapid prototyping with online publishing and critiquing that can cut the time and cost of requirements gathering in half.

Visualization tools make traditional requirements sessions appear heavy and arduous. The resulting simulation is so rich in functionality that you can actually show your stakeholders what they are going to get. In fact, the prototype is so robust that it can be used for training purposes while the development effort is underway.

This seminar is designed to discuss tools that engage stakeholders and get the requirements right, the first time -- before development begins.

    • Many college students often think spending hours coming up with ideas in their dorm room leads to business success and unicorn trajectory. This is the wrong approach, one that often leads to building solutions before actually understanding the right problem to solve.

Allen Gannett, 27 years old, started his first company while in college at George Washington University. Today he is the CEO of TrackMaven, and author of upcoming book The Creative Curve (June 2018, Penguin Random House), which lays out a solution any aspiring entrepreneur can follow to become a creative success.

Lightbulb moments don’t just happen, rather it’s a clear process followed by some of the world's leading creatives such as celebrity chefs, multi-platinum musicians, billionaire entrepreneurs, and fine artists. In this fireside chat, Gannett will share his founder journey, explore the science behind creativity, and answer questions to help students navigate the path of entrepreneurship.

      Key Takeaways for Students

      • You will learn the neurological and psychological mechanisms behind flashes of genius
      • How you can learn to have more of these so-called "aha" moments through the mass consumption of content
      • How famous creators engage in a strategy called “the 20% principle” that is accessible for anyone
      • How Allen has built his career and lessons learned through his experience

      About Allen

ALLEN GANNETT is the founder and CEO of TrackMaven, a marketing analytics platform whose clients have included Microsoft, Marriott, Saks Fifth Avenue, Home Depot, Aetna, Honda, and GE. He has been on the “30 Under 30” lists for both Inc. and Forbes. He is a contributor for FastCompany.com and has an upcoming book The Creative Curve, on how anyone can achieve moments of creative genius, coming out in June 2018 from Currency, a division of Penguin Random House. He was also once a very pitiful runner-up on Wheel of Fortune.

    • As blockchain becomes the shared infrastructure for more and more people to collaborate with one another, participate in global marketplaces, access essential services, and protect their personal data and assets, it is the responsibility of the larger tech community and governments around the world to make sure this technology reaches the vulnerable populations who need it and stand to benefit from it the most. The global refugee crisis, the fragile state of democracy in many regions, communities without infrastructure, and our planet’s unsustainable agricultural practices are constant reminders that there is much work to be done and that the task is too large for any one project or organization to make a lasting impact.

This June, the Biannual Blockchain for Social Impact Coalition Conference will bring together government officials, leading NGOs, charities, think tanks, impact investors, technologists, and innovators to harness the talent, enthusiasm, and resources of the impact community and to strategize about and develop blockchain-based solutions to pressing global challenges in the following areas: identity management, refugee resettlement, supply chain, energy, financial inclusion, human rights, democracy, and voting.

The Conference will be an opportunity to meet the specialists and organizations who are building solutions on the ground and working with key stakeholders, end beneficiaries, and governments to make an immediate and concrete difference in the developing world. Winners from this year’s Decentralized Impact Incubator will also present their projects, which are focusing on global issues regarding reliable hardware, refugee support, agriculture practices, and mechanisms for democracy.

We hope that you will join us for this day of learning and discovery as we discuss the state of the technology, scaling solutions, regulatory frameworks, design thinking, and how we can best collaborate to develop and deploy humanitarian blockchain solutions. We look forward to addressing the urgent issues of our time head-on, to working together to make blockchain a vital and accessible resource for citizens around the world, and to laying the groundwork for a sustainable, distributed, and shared future.

In our first course, Scrum Framework Developer Essentials, we'll explore the Scrum Framework and how it supports faster and simpler software development. In Design Pattern Developer Essentials, we'll discover a core set of design patterns that every developer should know. The program concludes with the popular Scrum Software Developer Essentials course, in which you’ll learn how to write higher quality code more quickly and with fewer defects using the practices from Extreme Programming (XP) that include test-first development, refactoring, and emergent design, as well as a variety of Agile problem-solving techniques.

You’ll be taken on a guided tour through essential developer practices such as story writing, sprint planning, pair programming, and test-driven development. You’ll learn how to discover patterns in problems and to implement designs as needed. We’ll also explore the principles behind the practices so you understand how to use them to make the best design choices, and you’ll gain a powerful framework for encapsulating and abstracting virtually any problem for maximum flexibility, without overcomplicating the solution.

By exploring the secrets of high-performance, cross-functional development teams you'll gain a shared design vocabulary for dramatically improving inter-team communication that can be applied equally well to new development and to maintaining or extending existing systems. Then we'll put theory into practice and apply your new skills by building the core of an application using the expert-level techniques you’ve learned for rapidly writing quality software.

By the end of this training program, you’ll be armed with several new, effective tools and techniques for Scrum development that will make your software more robust, manageable, and easier to extend.

      MITRE-ATARC Cloud Collaboration Symposium

The MITRE-ATARC Cloud Collaboration Symposium features discussion and white-boarding between government and industry subject matter experts in a small-group setting. The outcomes of these sessions will be compiled in a White Paper with recommendations to the government.

      SESSION TOPICS

      1. The Next-Gen Cloud: What should we do to prepare?

Cloud computing was a disruptive technology for the government, but is likely not the final evolution of computation adopted by the government. For example, Hyper-convergence and software defined data centers are shaping the next computation evolution. This session will focus on emerging cloud environments, technologies, and services to help the government “get ahead” of future evolutions in cloud computing.

      Activities

Discuss the next generation of cloud services “on the horizon”
Explore the mechanisms by which government cloud users can anticipate or prepare for next generation cloud adoption
Specifically discuss the notion of hyper-convergence and software defined data centers

      Output

Identified future cloud technologies and formats
Recommendations to the government and industry for easing government adoption of the next generation of cloud services
List of services that the government needs from the future cloud services
      Industry Lead

      2. DevSecOps: How can it help handle arising cloud security challenges?
Cloud security continues to be a prominent concern with government cloud adoption. DevSecOps is an emerging term referring to the notion of having a team-wide process of assessing risk, automating risk testing and security evaluation, and enabling team collaboration on security. This session aims to discuss the applicability of this concept to cloud adoption.

      Activities

Discuss security automation in terms of DevSecOps
Identify methods of reducing security risks for cloud adopters

      Output

Recommended approaches for DevSecOps for government cloud users
Identified challenges for implementing automation in cloud security

      Industry Lead

Diego Lapiduz, Chief Information Security Architect, Microsoft

      3. Adapting Data Center Policy for Speedy Cloud Migration

As the August 2017 Federal Cloud & Data Center Summit participants shared, the government is typically “good” at using data centers and less so at using cloud environments. This session will encourage the discussion of data center policy versus cloud policy and how the two can influence one another to improve the migration to cloud services and operation between clouds and traditional data centers.

      Activities

Discuss the differences between data center and cloud operation policies
Discuss the unique challenges or best practices for handling IoT data in a cloud
Explore the data handling and service recommendations to and from IoT endpoints
Identify how data center policy can help establish successful practices in a cloud environment

      Output

Identify specific aspects of government policy specific to successful data center operation (as opposed to cloud)

      Industry Lead

      4. From cloud to edge: Handling IoT in the cloud
IoT is becoming a pervasive technology, and is nearly constantly enabled or paired with cloud computing. As adoption of these devices continues, it will be increasingly important for the government to provide cloud services to enable their performance (e.g., via data analysis services). This session focuses on the actions that the government can take to prepare to support IoT. Smart cities, public safety, and traffic are all potential topics in this session.

      Activities

Discuss the unique challenges or best practices for handling IoT data in a cloud

Explore the data handling and service recommendations to and from IoT endpoints

      Output

Identify actions the government can take to prepare their cloud services for IoT
Recommended investments for IoT data services
Identify the role — or the needs — of industry products to enable IoT endpoints to consume cloud data

      5. Cloud Migration Aids: Gaps and Successes

There is an increasing need for migration planning and management tools by Federal Government cloud adopters. However, these tools are often scarce, vendor-specific, or custom-designed (i.e., with limited re-usability). This session will focus on migration efforts, success stories, and future needs from the perspective of the tools and aids used in the migration process.

      Activities

Recommended cloud policy changes to ease migration
IoT endpoints to consume cloud data

      Output

Identify actions the government can take to prepare their cloud services for IoT
Recommended investments for IoT data services
Identify the role – or the needs — of industry products to enable IoT endpoints to consume cloud data
